As we are coming up on International Women's Day, (March 8th) it's a good chance to remind the world about the talented Hungarian film directors who are female! There are many. But here are three whose films you can often find on streaming services in North America and Europe.

Márta Mészáros

In our New Citizen of the Old Country film and book club, we are currently watching a film by Márta Mészáros--one of the most accomplished Hungarian filmmakers of all time. She broke through so many barriers as a woman in filmmaking, and she is still going strong in her 90s! Here's a list of all her films.

Ildikó Enyedi

Ildikó Enyedi wrote and directed one of the most fascinating and beautiful films I've ever seen, On Body and Soul, which won many awards. Her work is well known throughout the world, and often has "crossover" success in the US as well. Here's a list of her films.

Krisztina Goda

Goda works in both drama and comedy and her films are usually big box-office hits in Hungary and Europe. Inspired by the recent Olympics, I'm going to check out her film Children of Glory, about the famous 1956 Hungary-USSR water polo match at the Melbourne Olympics. Here's a list of all her films.

This is just a short list of the talented Hungarian filmmakers who are female. I encourage you to find their films on your streaming platform of choice!

Please do let me know what Hungarian filmmakers you enjoy too!

And if you want to talk about films and books from Hungary, come and join our club. We'd love to have you.

Happy March!
